Barcelona Day 1

I LOVE Barcelona. Today we had an amazing guide that took us to the Parque Güell, Sagrada Familia, La Boqueria, and Barrio Gótico. It was the perfect mix of information and interesting legends or stories that went along with whatever we were seeing. Get ready for some beautiful photos! And many a selfie.

in the parque güell overlooking the city

the salamander of the park-it's like a guardian angel
because salamanders symbolize fighting against the devil. who knew?

really neat walkways. can you see the wave?

the pillars from a different angle

la basilica! sagrada familia is actually not a cathedral (you need to have
a bishop there for it to be a cathedral), it's a basilica (a special church)

walking in la rambla district-do you see the fountain behind me? legend says that if you drink the water
you will return again to Barcelona. you bet i chugged it down! can't wait to visit again!
A quick note about La Boqueria- I love love love indoor markets. And this one, unlike el mercado san miguel in Madrid, is a market that everyone goes to (not just tourists). So many fruits, veggies, different types of meat, cheese, and eggs...sigh. Just dreamy.
And today we found out that all this juice bar hype is old news here. I tried to capture the variety and quantity of juices that were everywhere but I don't know if I ever got a good enough shot. So use your imagination!

mango+papaya. yum!

look at that fruit! (and check out the size of the apricots front and center!)

tripe. mmmmm.

blurry remains of virginia and my paella

juices galore

juiiiice
And we can't forget about dessert! This is un turrón de crema catalana (turrón=nougat, crema catalana=creme brûlée on steroids). And when I mean creme brûlée on steroids I mean it! Very strong but oh so good.

mmmmm.

Tomorrow we'll wander around for the morning and then head to Tarragona to see some Roman ruins in the afternoon. And then to Salou, which is a beach town. Yay!
